The Prom approaches!
You’ve tattered the perfect dress, secured the vodka, stockpiled the condoms, borrowed your dad’s Gator, made dinner reservations…but did you remember that all- important staple of Prom wear: the Corsage?
In a post- apocalyptic world a lot has changed…but some traditions haven’t. Do YOU want to be the poor sap caught picking a bouquet of poison ivy at the last minute, hoping to pin it on your date’s bodice? Or would you rather be one of the few, the super- chic, the stylish and prepared, who flourishes a distinctive corsage?
Well, you can be That Enviable Guy (or Girl) who presents your date with a wearable floral arrangement they’ll never forget. And even if you don’t have a date to the Prom, who says you have to look like it?? Make a corsage for yourself! Join us for a workshop devoted to creating the corsage, wrist corsage, or boutonniere your high school chaperones only imagined in their wildest nightmares. Depending on your dexterity you’ll leave with one or several wearable floral pieces. We’ll have a generous array of everything you’ll need to do just that: silk flowers, ribbons, latex, beads and glitzy stuff, cat testicles, rhinestones, snake bones, medical appliances, stupid little plastic charms, scissors, needles and thread, pins, glue, tape and maybe even a few more interesting surprises. Or bring your own road kill and we’ll help you incorporate it into a to-die-for corsage.
We’ll have instructors eager to help you fold a perfect bow, box a perfect sheet corner, arrange a perfect bouquet.
We’ll even have a few examples on hand to help you get your creative juices flowing.
Please register here.
Tuesday May 11, 6:30-10:30 at the Flipside Warehouse
$20 registration for those who have not donated to Art Garden previously.  No one turned away due to lack of funds!

When: Saturday May 8th, 3pm-8pm
Where: Carrin Welch’s – East Austin (near the warehouse, address will be provided upon registration)

Carrin Welch will be hosting a Hula Hoop Making Workshop for hoop enthusiasts.  This workshop is open to anyone, and just in time for Flipside!  If you’re a new hooper who wants a hoop of their very own, need a new size, or perhaps you’d just like to know how to make hoops, this is your opportunity!

1″/100 psi tubing, connectors, and vinyl tapes (basic colors, 1st come-1st serve) will be provided. I will have a few different size hoops for you to try, teach you how to put your hoop together, and give you taping tips.

You should to bring a camp chair (if you prefer not to sit in the grass), something to drink if you want something other than water, and a willingness to listen and learn.  I will provide some snacks.

In case of rain, we may need to reschedule.  Please provide a valid method of contact via phone and email when you register for the workshop.  Registration is $20 unless you are a previous Art Garden donor.

Lampworking is a type of glass blowing that uses a specialized torch
to melt rods and tubes of clear and colored glass. Once in a molten
state the glass is formed by hand movements, gravity and shaping with
tools. We will provide basic instruction covering the tools of the
trade, safety gear and techniques followed by a demo showing you how
make and decorate a glass bead. Then we will move on to supervised
sessions at the torch to apply what you’ve learned.

Space is very limited. We hope to hold classes every two weeks until
we’ve gotten everyone who is interested through the primer course. If
you would like to continue with glass work after our introductory
course we can recommend a few places in town for more training.

Please be aware that there are inherent dangers when working with
molten glass at temperatures of up to 2000°F. We will not be
responsible for accidents that result in injury, and a liability waiver will be required.

Register here and please specify the time you would like to attend.

Currently we have sessions at 11 am and 3 pm on Saturday, Apr 10th.

Please bring the $20 registration fee in cash or check to the workshop unless you are a previous Art Garden donor.

Please email lucretia@texasaartgarden.org with any inquiries or if you would like to be put on the wait list for future glass workshops.

Art Garden is pleased to announce the availability of art grants intended for the 2010 Burning Flipside Festival!

The deadline for grant applications is 12-Noon Saturday, April 3rd. Grants will be awarded on April 7 at Church Night. These grants are “seed money” and are intended to enhance projects for community benefit. The requested amount should encompass less than 50% of total material costs for your project.

Art Grant Proposals will be evaluated based on the following:
• interactive/participatory
• original/creative
• feasible
• service to community/LNT values
• general awesomeness/jury excitement

We encourage freedom of expression in the presentation of your creativity! Each grant proposal must be submitted to artgrants@texasartgarden.org as one editable electronic document less than 7 MB and contain the following information:

1. Your full (real) name, street address, phone number and email address. This information is for financial bookkeeping and granting oversight purposes only and will be removed from the individual applications prior to the jury process.

2. A detailed description of the project. Please answer the following questions:
What is your project? (Name, Brief description)
How will your project involve the Flipside community through its planning, creation, realization, and removal? Will it need power? What is your power plan?
How and where will the piece/creativity be installed/performed and removed Leaving No Trace?
Will the piece incorporate flame effects, moveable pieces, and/or is it climbable? If so, how will you ensure the safety of the Flipside Participant? Please describe your Safety Plan in detail if applicable. (Note: if flame effects are used, your project will be subject to inspection by the Flipside Fire Chief, who has final say if your project will burn during the event).
What is your artistic vision for this project?

3. A thorough itemized budget and amount requested. What materials will you be using and how much do they cost? How will you transport those materials to and from Flipside and what are those costs? Will extra safety equipment and personnel be required? Keep in mind Art Garden is providing seed money for raw materials not transportation costs, and receipts will be required for our records.

4. A timeline detailing the planning, creation, installment, and removal of your project.
Optional but suggested: detailed drawings, CAD files, sketches, or other graphic illustrations of your creative concept. Please forward any questions and your completed grant proposals to artgrants@texasartgarden.org.

Grant winners will sign a contract stating their intent to:
• create the proposed art piece
• save receipts of materials and present copies of those receipts greater than or equal to grant amount along with a short follow-up report
• return funds if project is not completed
• lead one workshop for Art Garden

Amy “Starr” Benton was a founding member and the longest standing board member of Art Garden. We deeply mourn her loss, and will continue in her tradition of dreaming and doing to facilitate art to the local community.

Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to either Christopher House (www.hospiceaustin.org) or to Art Garden by cash or check – unfortunately we do not have a paypal account at this time. If you’d like to donate, please catch us (Sparky or Lucky) at church night or email donations@texasartgaren.org to make arrangements.
